Southern Comfort

Southern Comfort is an all-male singing group oriented towards providing a unique community for both novice and experienced singers. Southern Comfort works to stimulate interest and appreciation of music, and to provide an opportunity for singers to sing concerts in various public venues.

Constitution

History

Southern Comfort was originally started in the mid 1970's and remains Washington and Lee's only all-male a cappella group.

Mission Statement

Southern Comfort is an all-male singing group oriented towards providing a unique community for both novice and experienced singers. Southern Comfort works to stimulate interest and appreciation of music, and to provide an opportunity for singers to sing concerts in various public venues.

Requirements for Membership

• Membership may consist of any undergraduate student of Washington and Lee University
• Members must audition in front of Southern Comfort
• The opportunity to become a member is at the discretion of Southern Comfort and is based around a candidates audition.
• Members are expected to attend all Southern Comfort events (i.e. rehearsals, concerts)

Southern Comfort's Benefit to Washington and Lee University

Southern Comfort provides students the opportunity to take part in a unique musical community where they not only advance their musical skills, but also do it in a creative, exciting, and fun manner.
Southern Comfort allows the community to be entertained in the form of public concerts and performances in various settings. Southern Comfort has performed concerts for events such as Parents Weekend, Alumni Weekend, various alumni banquets, Alumni Weddings, Parties, Christmas Shows, and more.
This organization does not just perform songs, but we focus on performing in an exciting manner that is entertaining for both the audience and Southern Comfort members. Southern Comfort brings a high level of charisma to shows that is uncommon amongst a cappella groups and this makes Southern Comfort beneficial to the community in general.

Organization of Leadership/Officers

Southern Comfort has a President whose duties include:

  • Overseeing the other officers, maintaining the integrity of the group
  • Maintaining an agenda and order at all meetings, etc.
  • Representing Southern Comfort to the administration, to other campus organizations, and to the public
  • Coordinating with the Musical Director to ensure proper meeting procedures
  • Monitoring and maintaining forms of communication to Southern Comfort

Southern Comfort has a Vice President whose duties include:

  • Assisting the president in his duties
  • Filling in for the president during his absence
  • Promoting group welfare and morale and working to organize social events and retreats
  • Ensuring new members of the group are properly introduced and situated within the group

Southern Comfort has a Treasurer whose duties include:

  • Managing the current financial situation of the chapter
  • Submitting all expense reports
  • Submitting all reimbursements
  • Creating an annual budget

Southern Comfort has a Musical Director whose duties include:

  • Directing all practices and rehearsals
  • Making decisions regarding to musical arrangements, group singing structure and balance, and other items regarding the group's musicality

Elections are for officer positions are held in May and consist of the group members for the candidate of their choosing.
