History of the Company

The dance club was given a faculty advisor in 2006 when Jenefer Davies came to W&L to create the academic dance program. Prior to that point the company was very young and small and was existing solely on the dedicated volunteerism of students who loved dance and wanted to see it grow at W&L. In the fall of 2006 Davies came to campus and began creating classes for the dance program and teaching. The dance club raised money for the students to attend the American College Dance Festival. In 2008 the dance club became a charter member of the W&L chapter of Nu Delta Alpha, whose national chapter has since disbanded. In 2016, the company was grandfathered into the National Honor Society in Dance Arts in its place. Every year rising juniors and seniors can be inducted into the based on their participation and service to the group. Every year rising juniors and seniors are inducted into the honor society based on their participation and service to the group. Over the years the company has grown and developed from a group of about 15 to a strong company with numbers as high as 40. The dance program has grown to include a minor, a nationally recognized aerial dance focus, two full productions a year as well as performances nationally, internationally and with annual performances in New York City. The dance company now brings professional guest artists to campus to teach, set new work and perform with the student dancers. As the company grew so did the reputation of the dance program at W&L as did the level of performance and academic achievement of its members.
