The Debate Club seeks to improve the critical and analytical thinking of the debaters and help them present their thoughts in the most eloquent and persuasive way.
Debating teaches constructive argumentation in a persuasive manner. The goal of the club is to facilitate the public speaking skill of the members. By participating in tournaments, the debaters will engage in intellectual discussions with a diverse range of students from all over the country. This will help our debaters to broaden their perspective and gain self-confidence by arguing their point of view in a constructive way. While debating, you have to defend arguments even if you do not agree with them. This teaches you to be open minded.
Requirements for Membership:
The club is open to all. We welcome anyone who shows passion for debating and is committed. Prior experience is not required.
Benefits to Washington and Lee University:
British Parliamentary debate is a prestigious platform for colleges. Universities like Yale, Harvard, Princeton and Williams College regularly participate in regional and international parliamentary debate tournaments. Our debate club will represent Washington and Lee University and compete directly with these institution. Moreover, through the club we want to open constructive discussions about relevant issues. We believe that having proper discourse is the best way to tackle social problems. The debate club will also educate the member how to approach an issue with an open mind and make proper judgments after seeing both sides of the issue.
