General Development Initiative, Inc. [GenDev] Please visit gendevinitiative.org for more information

GenDev looks to engage Washington & Lee students in experiential education in social entrepreneurship and international development while also fostering in all graduates a greater sense of international social obligation, irrespective of their field of study. Our members act as positive ambassadors of the Washington & Lee community by implementing our education in such a way that fosters immediate and sustainable change domestically, as well as abroad in communities located in LDC regions.

Mission Statement

  1. Provide experiential education in social entrepreneurship and international development to students of diverse academic backgrounds.
  2. Enrich the classroom experience and educational environment for all Washington and Lee students by promoting dialogue surrounding social entrepreneurship, microfinance, and development issues both inside and outside of the classroom.
  3. Foster a greater sense of social obligation/responsibility in all graduates, irrespective of their field of study.
  4. Act as positive ambassadors of the Washington and Lee community through education that fosters immediate and sustainable change domestically and in developing regions.

Benefit to W&L and the Surrounding Community

GenDev benefits the community through microfinance loans and grants that we intend to provide. GenDev is developing financial education lessons that will accompany our loans so that we can provide a holistic service to the community. Finally, GenDev benefits W&L by allowing our members to engage in development work while still at W&L. This experience can then be adapted for future careers, not only in microfinance and international development, but also in entrepreneurship, finance, accounting, marketing, and strategic communications, among others.
