Crux Climbing Team

Our mission is to facilitate and provide opportunities to a group of highly motivated Washington and Lee students who wish to seek adventure in climbing. It will be our charge to train in safety practices, technique and skill at both indoor and outdoor venues. Through providence of facilities and training we shall enter regional competition. The Crux Climbing Team will organize workouts tailored to the needs of competitive climbers. We shall promote the teaching and practice of advanced mountain climbing techniques. It is the goal of the Crux climbing team to provide its members with the opportunity to implement these skills in real world applications, whether it is high altitude alpine climbing or competitive gym bouldering.

Magna Charter of the Washington & Lee Crux Climbing Team

Article I: Title

This student run organization shall be titled as the Washington & Lee Crux Climbing Team.

Article II: History

In the year 2012 our founding member, Chase Flint, constructed in the basement of the Outing Club House Washington and Lee's first sport bouldering wall. Only a handful of members were active in the club after its conception. In 2014 these highly motivated members branched out and constructed a new bouldering wall in the back stall of the Outing Club Barn where it still serves Washington and Lee's pioneering climbers.

Article III: Purpose and Intention

It shall be the intention of Crux Climbing Team to make available an amiable and accepting environment for safe practice of sport and healthy sportsmanship. Our aim shall be to showcase advancements in skill through competition and to seek sportsmanship outside of the campus community.

Article IV: Membership

Offer of membership shall be offered, but not limited, to all Washington and Lee University students, faculty and staff. Membership will never be subject to any form of demographic discrimination. Previous experience or skill is not required for membership. All members will be encouraged to participate in all training events, indoor and outdoor climbing session, climbing competitions and club advertisement events.

Article V: Officers and Captains

All officers will be matriculated Washington and Lee students. Officers will be nominated and elected by current members of the Crux Climbing Team. There will be two co-captains of the climbing team. The captains will oversee membership status, officer positions, fundraising events, schedule meetings, and coordinate transportation. Captains reserve the right to create more officer positions if such positions would benefit the Crux Climbing Team.
Elections will be held at the end of each Winter Term with change of office occurring the beginning of the following Fall Term. All active members have one vote per officer position. Current officers are able to run for reelection; there is no limit to length of time holding an office. Captains reserve the right to decide elections which repeatedly result in a member-vote draw.
Captains have right to captainship until graduation with the exception of a four-fifths majority vote to impeach. Captainship shall be bequeathed by graduating captains, based on the incumbent's merits in club involvement, leadership, and climbing knowledge and skill.

Article VI: Promotion and Meetings

It shall be the policy of the Crux Climbing Team to host bi-weekly meetings whereby we shall discuss training regiments, organization of climbing trips, upcoming competitions, financials, team building exercises, and general club updates. The Crux Climbing team will be represented at the Student's Activity fair. Informational and training-tips session will be held per the discretion of the reigning officers.

Article VII: Finances

The Washington and Lee Crux Climbing Team will incur funding through membership dues, fund-raising events (as approved by a two-thirds officer's vote), and funds allotted through Washington & Lee's Campus Recreation department. All dispersals and uses of funds once received must be approved before use by a two-thirds officer's vote.

Article VIII: Amendments and By-Laws

Captains and officers of the Washington & Lee Crux Climbing Team reserve the right to create more officer positions and appoint committees if it would so benefit the Crux Climbing Team. The team reserves the right to extend participation to non-members for practices and non-competition events in order to expand its involvement.
