I spent my summer with the Oregon Natural Desert Association in Bend, Oregon. They focus on wilderness designation in eastern Oregon and act as a watchdog for the Bureau of Land Management to ensure that public land is being managed correctly. Some highlights of my internship were helping with ecological studies in Riparian habitat restoration. monitoring endangered trout, aggregating GPS data for a potential wilderness area, photos for GIS documentation, and assisted with a derelict barbed wire fence pull in the scenic Hart Mountain Antelope Refuge. I learned a lot about land use stuggles and got a sense of the kinds of ground work and political maneuvering that protecting public land requires.
