Please join East Asian Studies for an afternoon lecture by Stephanie Ho, Thursday, May 2 at 3:15pm, Leyburn Library Room 201. Ms. Ho was Voice of America Beijing bureau chief from 2008 to 2012 and VOA's Beijing-based China correspondent from 1995-2000. Her lecture will fill you in on what keeps so many Western heavy-hitters going to China.


New Opportunities through ASIANetwork for Students, and for Faculty

From the Director: Warm greetings from ASIANetwork! I hope your semester is off to a good start! I write to remind you of the upcoming deadlines for six ASIANetwork programs. I also want to inform you that starting this year the student winner of the Marianna McJimsey Student Paper Competition will be asked to present at a panel during the conference - so please encourage your students to submit their papers on Asia. The winner will get a certificate, a cash award, free room and board at the conference, and the chance to present at a panel - a great resume booster!


The Orchid Ensemble

On October 1 at 7pm, the Orchid Ensemble will play in University Chapel. Established in 1997, the Juno-nominated Orchid Ensemble blends ancient musical instruments and traditions from China and beyond, creating a beautiful and distinct new sound.

On Thursday April 26, in Leyburn Room M47, Dr. Li Nan, Research Fellow at CASS in Beijing, China, and Fellow at SAIS, Johns Hopkins, will present a lecture on Chinese Strategic thinking on North Korea and the "new game."


Migrant Families Straddle the Rift between Two Chinas: Crossing One of the World's Largest Rural - Urban Gaps

East Asian Studies Program & PAACE, May 9 at 12:20pm, present a (free, delicious,) catered lunch in the Reeves Center and a research presentation by Bethany Reynolds ('13). Ms. Reynolds will provide an introduction to one of the major socioeconomic transformations of our time that is already producing significant global demographic, consumer and ecological effects. Question and answer session will follow.


Annual Bus trip to Washington, D.C.
East Asian Art Museums and Korean Grocery

East Asian Studies, with generous support from the Depts. of Religion, History, East Asian Languages & Literatures and International Education will be taking its Annual Bus trip to Washington, D.C. on Saturday, March 31 to take in the National Cherry Blossom Festival's 100th anniversary, visit the Mall's East Asian art museums and, of course, shop at a Korean Supermarket.
