What do F-1 visa, J-1 visa, I-20, DS-2019, I-901 Sevis Fee, and I-94 mean?

  • F-1 Visa: full time, degree seeking international students who are enrolled in an academic program or English Language Program at a US college or university.
  • J-1 Visa: exchange visitors for short-term visiting scholars and exchange students.
  • I-20: F visa students must have I-20 (Ceritificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status) from their desginated school official. You MUST bring the document as you enter the US, and it needs to be signed.
  • DS-2019: form that tells the US governement that you are eligible for J-1 student visa status in order to study at a particular US university. Itcertifies that you are or expect to be enrolled as a full-time student.
  • I-901 Sevis Fee: fee that F visa students and J exchange visitors must pay before issuing a visa. Sutdents pay this fee after receiving I-20. It is good to keep the receipt.
