SPAN 213 - Seville and the Foundations of Spanish Civilization

This course takes place in Seville, Spain, and uses this privileged location to study the cultures of Early Spain. Primary focus is on the medieval and Renaissance periods, from the early co-existence of Muslims, Jews, and Christians to the Reconquista and ultimately Empire. Significant culture currents are examined through texts (literary, historical and religious), direct contact with art and architecture through site visits, and with contemporary cuisine and customs. Students live in homestays, attend daily classes, make site visits, and engage with the local culture independently and through planned activities.

Prerequisites: Completion of SPAN 162 or 164 by the end of winter term 2019.

Program Fee (paid to W&L): $3,000. This fee includes room and board in a home, including laundry, lodging and full board in Seville, lodging and full board for overnight study trips in Granada, ground transportation for all included study trips, excursions and visits, high-speed internet access and computer support in the Center's facility.

Estimated other costs not included in program fee:  $1850 (Airfare - $1,500; incidentals - $250; personal ground transportation - $50; international phone fee - $50)
