G. Calvin Awkward III '06, '09L
Mr. Awkward is a 2006 graduate and majored in European History. During his time at Washington and Lee, he was a member of numerous organizations on campus to include Residential Life, Chi Psi fraternity, Nabors Service League, Gay-Straight Alliance, Multicultural Students Organization, Fancy Dress Committee, Traveller, and Peer Counselors. Mr. Awkward was also the chair of the Annual AIDS Awareness Fundraiser and 2004 W&L Voter Registration Drive. During the summers, Mr. Awkward interned in the Student Affairs Office at Washington and Lee.
In the fall of 2006, Mr. Awkward enrolled in Washington and Lee School of Law. During his three years in the law school, Mr. Awkward was involved in the Student Bar Association, Black Law Students Association, Outlaw, and Law Revue. He was also selected for a position as an honor advocate, Kirgis fellow and student member of the American Inns of Court. Looking for practical experience, Mr. Awkward obtained an internship with the Honorable William D. Heatwole, Twenty-Fifth Judicial Circuit of Virginia and actively handled cases as a student attorney with the Community Legal Practice Clinic.Upon graduation from law school in 2009, Mr. Awkward returned to Maryland to clerk for the Honorable John H. Tisdale ('74L), Frederick County Circuit Court. Mr. Awkward clerked for a second year with the Honorable Theresa M. Adams, Frederick County Circuit Court. After spending five years working for a Bethesda, Maryland based insurance defense firm, Mr. Awkward is currently a practicing attorney at Franklin & Prokopik, P.C. in Baltimore, Maryland. His practice focuses on civil litigation, including automobile liability, first-party insurance defense, insurance coverage, condominium and homeowners' association litigation, and construction.
