East Africa has been among the W&L Traveller’s most popular destinations. Why? It may be that wildlife safaris in Tanzania and Kenya are habit-forming. Once you’ve experienced the unforgettable, you have a natural longing to relive the adventure. Indeed, at the end of each safari, we’ve promised our travelers that we’ll return soon, for there is no place on earth that presents the life and natural order of things more eloquently.

For the traveler who wants to combine the best of African wildlife with the surprising comfort, sophistication, and security of East Africa’s newest game lodges, Tanzania and Kenya together offer irresistible appeal. Here you’ll find the big five—lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and cape buffalo—at home in the fenceless immensity of the Serengeti. In the vast stillness of the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the earth’s largest natural game preserves, you’ll observe the big cats stalking wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle moving in herds as large as a lake. In the distance you may find the magnificent eland, king of the antelopes, or a pair of giraffes loping along or nosing high into the acacia trees, or a family of gazelles dotting the hills that roll and rise to the far cliffs that mark the edge of the Great Rift Valley where the Mara River runs its course. Riding along the banks of the Mara, you’ll come upon families of hippos wallowing in the tree-lined rivers that ribbon through the savannas.  As you move from camp to camp, you’ll encounter a world you’ve only dreamed about, a place of rare freedom, of true wildness. Our safari climaxes with three days of wildlife-viewing in the magnificent Maasai Mara Reserve, also known as the “Jewel of Africa,” a site with one of the largest and most spectacular animal migrations in the world.

East Africa offers more than just another wildlife adventure, but a journey into the heart of nature. On the immense arena of the Serengeti, where millions of animals still live in total freedom, the drama of creation plays out each day. Happily, you’ll still be able to sleep at night, for the accommodations that we’ve reserved are really quite remarkable. The new Serena properties throughout our itinerary offer ingenious architecture, spacious bedrooms, and delicious meals, as well as easy access to game viewing.

For travelers wishing to extend their visit to East Africa, we’re offering a five-day optional extension to the Samburu Reserve, located on the fringes of Kenya’s vast northern region. The Reserve is within the lands of the colorful Samburu people, close relatives of the Maasai, and home to a number of wildlife species rarely found elsewhere in Kenya.
