W&L's Johnson Scholarship Program selects students on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated leadership and their potential to contribute to the intellectual and civic life of the W&L campus and of the world at large in years to come.

What does it cover?

Winners receive awards of at least tuition, room and board. Students with financial need higher than this amount will have any additional need met by the scholarship. In addition, Johnson Scholars receive funding in the amount of $7,000 to support summer experiences, including research, service, internships and travel.

How is it awarded?

If you wish to be considered for a Johnson Scholarship, submit a complete Common Application, including the W&L Writing Supplement, no later than December 1. About 200 finalists will be invited to campus for the Johnson Scholarship Competition in early March. All costs associated with attending the competition will be paid by Washington and Lee.

Is my application binding?

No. You do not to apply under W&L's binding Early Decision I plan in order to be considered for the Johnson Scholarship or other merit-based awards.

What about other scholarships?

Applying for a Johnson Scholarship ensures consideration for all other merit-based scholarships. W&L offers a variety of regional and departmental awards each year. While these scholarships are separately named, students must apply for the Johnson Scholarship in order to be considered for them.
