President John W. Elrod's vision for the Commons was to serve as the “living room” for Washington and Lee University. The Elrod Commons serves as the center of student life and activity. It is the central location for all constituencies of the university to gather and feel at home. The Elrod Commons serves as a place to enhance the learning experience of the University, promote social development, and foster collaboration and communication among all.
Opened in fall 2003 and named for a former president of the University, the John W. Elrod University Commons is the hub of student life at W&L. The building is home to the University Bookstore, Career Services, Student Affairs, University Security, student dining facilities, a convenience store, a theater, student organization offices, meeting rooms, lounge spaces and an outdoor amphitheater.
The Commons is located behind the Williams School of Commerce, Economics and Politics, overlooking Woods Creek. Parking is available at the University's parking garage, located next to the Warner Center.
