Caribbean Society

Our focus is to bring together proactive members of the Caribbean/Caribbean-American community, as well as those who sympathize and understand our cause, into an effective group. The Caribbean Society will expose the important elements of the region to the campus and community at large. The group will focus on the culture, food, politics, visual and performing arts endemic to the Caribbean.

English for Speakers of Other Languages

The mission of The English for Speakers of Other Languages Program is to facilitate communication between the English and non-English speaking populations in Rockbridge County. Although ESOL has focused on the Hispanic community, the program works with speakers of all languages. We offer formal ESOL classes and one-on-one tutoring arrangements, as well as free translation of documents from Spanish into English and a hotline to provide immediate interpreting and translation services.

Gay-Straight Alliance

Each member of the W&L community benefits from any and all measures to increase tolerance and acceptance of the differences within it. GSA will serve as an organization for students, administrators, and faculty committed to increasing tolerance and acceptance of the gay, lesbian and bisexual members of the W&L community.

General's Gentlemen's League

Welcome to the official homepage of the General’s Gentlemen’s League. The objectives of GGL are leadership development of, the promotion of personal growth, and providing a positive collegiate experience for multicultural men at Washington and Lee. This year, we hope to achieve these goals through a diverse array of educational and social events. We hope to train our members to be effective leaders as well as equip them with the tools they will need to have a meaningful and enjoyable experience at W&L. International Relations Association

The International Relations Association (IRA) seeks to increase awareness and understanding of international political issues on campus by organizing debates, forums, speakers and discussions on various topics. Discussions are open to everyone and aim at developing speaking abilities and global awareness in its participants. Model United Nations (MUN) is also run under IRA. In Model U.N., students step into the shoes of ambassadors from U.N. member states to debate current issues on the organization’s vast agenda. Joyful Noise

Joyful Noise is a Christian organization committed to encourage and inspire members of the W&L campus and outside communities with the gospel experience by spreading the Word of God through song and dance. In the Fall of 1999 Dafnette Prothro helped to establish Joyful Noise as a way to bring the gospel experience to W&L’s campus. Joyful Noise offers an outlet for students through the praise and worship of God while exposing and engaging the W&L community in the experience of gospel music. Membership is open to all interested students and faculty.

Ladies' Club

The Ladies' Club is a group of multicultural women who get together at least twice a month to participate in a wide variety of activities that emphasize “social learning”. From group discussions to study breaks, bowling night to spa night, and cooking for a party to line dancing, the Ladies' Club is a chance for the women of the multicultural community to come together and, quite simply, have a good time!

Minority Outreach Recruitment Entourage

The missions of this organization are to, in coordination with the Admissions Office, recruit minority students to Washington and Lee University as well as integrate qualified minority students into the W&L community.Advisor: Erin Hutchinson

Multicultural Student Association (MSA)

Seeks to secure a just and harmonious manner to resolve our disputes and promote ethnic cultural awareness among ethnic students as well as others through cooperation with students and faculty. We strive to support the recruitment and retention of academically qualified minority candidates, provide a social support group for minority students in fostering their success and happiness.

Onyx

The mission of Onyx is to promote community interaction among Black students at Washington and Lee University. In order to achieve this mission, Onyx will provide a forum for the exchange of economic, political, social and cultural views of Black students; expose issues pertaining to Black students along with nurturing intracampus and intercampus relationships with other organizations; and perform community service within Rockbridge County.

Pan Asian Association for Cultural Exchange (PAACE)

Hosting events within the W&L community and community at large, PAACE plans and coordinates activities creating awareness and appreciation for Asian culture. PAACE aims to introduce events and activities that will cultivate understanding and knowledge of the various Asian heritages and Asian-American backgrounds represented at W&L. The organization also seeks to provide an environment facilitating interaction within the Asian and Asian-American community. Working with other organizations and groups that promote diversity education and cultural awareness, PAACE endeavors to help make W&L a more integrated and globally aware campus.

SAIL International Development and Relief Group (IDRG)

The IDRG aims to inform and increase international relief and development awareness in the W&L community and thus promotes W&L commitment to assist developing countries economically and socially. We show our commitment to immediate relief and long-term development through fundraising on campus and through direct personal involvement at grassroots in developing countries.

The ISA seeks to make the W&L experience for international students an enjoyable one. It aims to address issues and concerns surrounding international students living on campus such as visa, international flights, phone rates, and postgraduate career opportunities.

Spanish House

4 Lee Avenue W&L, in its support of the Casa Hispànica, seeks to establish a social and academic environment in which students promote communication in Spanish and enhance knowledge of the numerous and different Hispanic cultures.
