Kayla Welch wins LACS Senior Award
Kayla Welch was recently awarded the 2013 LACS Senior Award by the Core and Affiliate LACS faculty. A Spanish major and LACS minor, Kayla shaped her LACS studies around questions of Latin American cultural identity, particularly in the transnational migratory context. These interests developed from her experiences both as part of the website onPoverty.org (Site Editor, '11-'13), which exposed her to the U.S. media's portrayals of Latinos in relation to poverty, and as a member of the broader Lexington community, where she tutored Latino immigrants in English language skills. Her Senior Capstone project - "An Alternative Lexington: Fashioning Home, Place, and Belonging Among Lexington's Latino Immigrant Community"- probes transnational identity negotiation among Lexington's own Latino immigrant community.
