The scale of China's thirty-year marketization program has made it the second largest economy in the world, as of last year, but has also created one of the world's largest socioeconomic gaps between urban & rural people, who now each make up roughly half of China's 1.3 billion people. Current government policies have exacerbated this uneven economic development of the "Two Chinas," triggering the largest internal migration in world history from poor rural regions to wealthier urban areas.
