Academic Technologies has a classroom set of 30 iPad 3s for classroom use. We encourage participation of professors from several different departments in the College and Williams School who are interested in reserving iPads for course use. Share with us your motivation for using iPads in instruction--what learning outcomes will the iPad help you and your students achieve in a manner superior to other technologies--electronic or otherwise?
Note: This program is still in piloting phase for Winter 2013. Several faculty members have already been chosen as program testers, and barring any scheduling conflicts additional requests will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis for this term. We anticipate the program to be fully developed for the 2013/14 school year, and will begin requesting applications well before the start of that year to allow for planning and scheduling.
ITS has a cart that allows us to charge, configure and secure the iPads in one place. This technology is new to us and program participants' feedback will be vital to inform us on how best to manage these resources.
Depending on how frequently your class will be using the iPads and on how many iPads you are requesting, you may want to check them out for the entire semester, determine a fixed schedule for checkout/in of the iPads, or you may want to have students check out/in the iPads from Academic Technologies as needed.
iOS Apps and Funding
We are utilizing the Apple Configurator application to configure and manage classroom iPads. This software allows us to pre-load settings, apps and content. When you fill out the application, you will be asked to provide us with a list of desired apps, free and paid, that you would like pre-loaded on the iPads. Paid apps can be purchased by ITS through a volume license which may result in a discount. ITS may be able to help fund generic applications that would be useful across disciplines, but funding for discipline-specific apps will be the responsibility of the department. Once purchased, apps will be available for future semesters/students.
In case of damage or loss of equipment
Individuals (professors and students) will be responsible for replacement of lost or damaged iPads and accessories.
Determination of participation
After the initial 2012/13 piloting phase, in the event that we receive more applications for this program than we can accommodate, ITS will enlist the assistance of the Dean of the College office and/or the Dean of the Commerce School office in deciding which requests should go forward for the semester.
Applications are due by Friday, December 14, by noon EST for Winter term 2013.
