The Tibetan Buddhist art of sand mandala making is a delicate and labor-intensive practice requiring years of training. Given the scholastic and artistic prerequisites for learning this religious art form, the practice was solely reserved for well-educated male monastics. Over the past 20 years, however, Buddhist nuns from the Keydong Thukche Choling Nunnery, located in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal, have mastered this art form.
Several of these nuns will demonstrate the practice of sand- mandala making, as well as discuss the significance of women engaging this previously restricted sacred art practice. Please join us for a demonstration, lecture, meditation, and/or conversation during their two-day visit.
