L'Arche homes are designed to provide a nurturing and stable environment for people with intellectual disabilities. Member assistants choose to live in community with core people, those with intellectual disabilities, and care for them by offering hands-on assistance with daily living skills, finances and health care. By living together under the same roof, member assistants share their gifts and talents while enjoying the gifts and talents offered by the core people. They participate in community prayer, spiritual retreats, and celebrations. Member assistants are asked to make a one-year commitment, preferably two. As members of the community, member assistants receive their own room, board, health insurance, and a generous monthly stipend. Assistants who are eligible can also receive an AmeriCorps education grant of almost $10,000 over the course of two years.
