Meet the Instructors

  • Rob Benevento

  • Don Burks
    Yoga Instructor
    Don is a graduate of the US Naval Academy, USN Test Pilot School, and W&L Law. He spent 20 years as a Navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and test pilot instructor. As an attorney, Don has worked as a prosecutor, litigator, and presently has a local, general practice. He started yoga over 20 years ago and has studied with teachers throughout the US and in different disciplines. Don has taught yoga at W&L, other universities, and in the local area for the last 10 years.
  • Ray Cohen
    Cardio/TRX/Cycling Instructor
    Ray Cohen has been a mainstay of the Rockbridge health and fitness community since 1990. He is a certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor who is teaching Cardio, TRX and Group Cycling classes.

  • Katie Gahan
    Sport Circuit and Cycling Instructor
    I started in group exercise in 2009 when I became a certified Les Mills Body Attack instructor and I have taught Body Attack at Southern Virginia University since May 2009. I have been teaching at Washington and Lee since September 2010 teaching both Cycling and Sports Circuit. I love high intensity and interval training mixed with great music so I try to include all three of those aspects into each one of my classes. I plan to become a certified spin instructor this winter.
  • Robert Koch
    Cycling Instructor
    My name is Robert Koch and I've been teaching group cycling since 2011. I suppose I'm a bit of a fish out of water, as I was a Division I swimmer back in my undergraduate years down in North Carolina. I'm actually from the Shenandoah Valley and work full time in the admissions office here at W&L. I got into running after college and after building a bike while living in Memphis, I decided to give group cycling a try. Look forward to seeing you all on the stationary bikes!
  • Jessie Knadler
    Pilates Fusion Instructor
    A lifelong devotee of fitness, Jessie Knadler has been practicing Pilates and yoga for 13 years and received her certification from Stott Pilates in 2008. Since then, her class has evolved to include a blend of styles that inspire her, drawing from Pilates, yoga, and muscular structure strength training. By day, she is a writer and journalist. Her articles and stories have appeared in Newsweek, the Wall Street Journal, Women's Health, among many others. She is the author of Rurally Screwed: My Life Off the Grid with a Cowboy (Berkley/Penguin, 2012) and the cookbook Tart & Sweet (Rodale, 2011). She lives in Rockbridge County with her husband and her daughter.
  • Anne Lemon
    Pilates and Zumba Instructor
    I have been teaching Pilates since 2009 and maintain a current certification through the Pilates Certification Center in Raleigh, NC. My Pilates classes have a moderate pace and focus especially on form. I help my Pilates students strengthen their core muscles, but I also teach them to become more aware of how they are holding their bodies and how to use their core in their daily lives. In 2001 I became a licensed Zumba instructor and I also teach Zumba classes at W&L. I have only one word for Zumba dance: FUN! I love teaching both classes at W&L and I thoroughly enjoy my students.
  • Shana Levine
    Sport Circuit and Cycling Instructor
    Shana Levine teaches sport circuit and is hoping to get more involved in group ex going forward. She had a blast and learned a lot at the DCAC fitness conference this past summer. Shana is CPR/AED and First Aid Certified and is working toward her ACE group fitness certification.She spends most of her time serving as Washington and Lee's Associate Director of Athletics and teaching her spring term course - Women in Sport. A 2001 Washington and Lee graduate, Shana earned a bachelor of arts in biology from W&L, where she was a four-year letterwinner and a team captain for the soccer team. Shana then went on to earn a law degree from the University of Pittsburgh. While in law school, she served as an assistant women's soccer coach at Carnegie Mellon University. Shana then returned to W&L following three years with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

  • Wendy Orrison
    Step Class Instructor
    Wendy grew up taking dance and has always loved music and movement. She has been a certified Group Fitness Instructor since 1997. She loves step and aerobics classes that have a dance flavor. Orrison received Certification in kickboxing in '99, Pilates in '03 then yoga in '09; and enjoys adding touches of all to any class that she teaches. Orrison is the head field hockey coach at W&L and teaches the PE yoga and aerobics classes.
  • Jeff Shay
    Cycling Instructor
    Jeff has been teaching group cycling since first getting hooked in 1996. He's an avid sailor, golfer, skier, and mountain biker and loves the outdoors. After graduating from college he raced on the US Alpine Pro Ski Tour. He also loves his day job as the Johnson Professor of Entrepreneurship and Leadership at the Williams School. Come join him for an early (and I mean early) morning workout and start your day off with a bounce in your step!
  • Holly Snyder
    Body Sculpt Instructor
    Holly has been in and around the fitness world for over a decade. She is the PE Teacher for Waddell Elementary School and the founder of Camp PLAY (a summer activity camp for kids). She started teaching Body Sculpt in Winter 2011. Previously, she was the head Athletic Trainer for Washington and Lee Athletics. She is certified as a strength and conditioning specialist and a personal trainer through the NSCA. In her free time, she loves to run, hike and exercise with her family.
