Samuel Legrand Campbell

Liberty Hall Academy, 1796-1798
Washington Academy, 1798-1799

Samuel Campbell, who also served as a trustee, managed the small institution of approximately seven students. During this period, and with the gift of stock from George Washington, the institution survived the General Assembly's attempt to make the academy into a public institution. The gift and the potential takeover resulted in a change of name, to Washington Academy.
