Robert Alexander

Augusta Academy
1749-1762

Robert Alexander was a Scots-Irish immigrant from Ulster, Ireland, who had received mathematical and classical training in Edinburgh. His school, Augusta Academy, served fellow immigrants of Scottish descent who also had come from Ulster. It was located near Greenville in Augusta County, Va. Classes likely had fewer than 10 male students, who were probably in their mid- to late teens. They were preparing to enter college, often with the goal of becoming Presbyterian ministers.
