Alumni Perspectives

  • Dr. Robert Maslansky '52
    Shepherd Alliance Intern Supervisor
Ten years ago Tom Shepherd, the progenitor and sponsor of the eponymous Shepherd Poverty Program, visited us at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. Coincidentally, he was a classmate of mine, W&L Class of 1952. I didn't know Tom well then but over this last decade I have had at least nine occasions to silently bless him for his kindness and his utter genius at making his generosity work in a way that will pay large dividends for many years to come.
  • Sonia Siu '07
    2006 Shepherd Alliance Intern
When I came to W&L, I imagined I would graduate with a degree in politics and go straight to law school. I graduated with so much more - literally. I graduated with three majors (business, politics and German), two degrees (a BA and a BS), and one certificate in the Shepherd Program for the Interdisciplinary Study of Poverty and Human Capability.

    2008 Shepherd Alliance Intern
    Health Care
    Bellevue Hospital
    New York, NY
As early as my first month in medical school, I am recognizing the continued influence of my completion of the Shepherd Poverty Program and especially of my internship experience on my education. The summer of 2008, I was lucky enough to spend my days with Dr. Maslansky, his medical and social work staff, and his patients at Bellevue Hospital's Methadone Maintenance Treatment Program.
