The Alumni Perspective
Dr. Robert Maslansky '52 Ten years ago Tom Shepherd, the progenitor and sponsor of the eponymous Shepherd Poverty Program, visited us at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. Coincidentally, he was a classmate of mine, W&L Class of 1952. I didn't know Tom well then but over this last decade I have had at least nine occasions to silently bless him for his kindness and his utter genius at making his generosity work in a way that will pay large dividends for many years to come.

Andrea Hanick '10 As early as my first month in medical school, I am recognizing the continued influence of my completion of the Shepherd Poverty Program and especially of my internship experience on my education. The summer of 2008, I was lucky enough to spend my days with Dr. Maslansky, his medical and social work staff, and his patients at Bellevue Hospital's Methadone Maintenance Treatment Program.

Sonia Siu '07 When I came to W&L, I imagined I would graduate with a degree in politics and go straight to law school. I graduated with so much more - literally. I graduated with three majors (business, politics and German), two degrees (a BA and a BS), and one certificate in the Shepherd Program for the Interdisciplinary Study of Poverty and Human Capability.

2011 Shepherd Alliance
Sixty-one students from Washington and Lee University, the W&L School of Law, Baylor University, Berea College, Lynchburg College, Middlebury College, Morehouse College and Spelman College have begun their eight-week Shepherd Alliance internships in agencies as far south as Atlanta, Ga., and Marvell and Helena, Ark., to as far north as Boston. The agencies range from The Clinton Foundation in New York City to the Atlanta Community Food Bank to the Fan Free Clinic in Richmond, Va. Two will work on the Navajo reservation in Arizona, while three will be in Lexington at the Rockbridge Free Clinic and the Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee. In addition, seven W&L undergraduates will serve in internships in Australia, Tanzania, Thailand, Peru and Ecuador.
The Shepherd Alliance internship program is expected to challenge and test classroom knowledge against first-hand experience with poverty, removing barriers and enhancing the capability to overcome it. The program began with an orientation and opening conference at Washington and Lee in early June and will end with a closing conference at W&L July 29-31 during which the interns report on their experiences and begin to consider the impact of the lessons they learned on their future work, both personally and professionally.
This summer's participants include 30 W&L undergraduates, four students from the W&L School of Law, two from Baylor University, 17 from Berea College, two from Lynchburg College, two from Middlebury College, one from Morehouse College and three from Spelman College. Washington and Lee administers the alliance in collaboration with each participating school and the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation, which supports anti-poverty programs in the area of hunger and education.
