Ryan Hartman '12 Awarded a Fulbright
Geology and Russian Area Studies double major Ryan Hartman of Yorktown, Va. received a grant for postgraduate study from the prestigious Fulbright Program Ryan will conduct research in Kazakhastan.

The Robinson Seminar for First-Year Students in the physical sciences
Jamie Small '81 geology major, P'15, and his wife, Alison Small P'15, have set up an endowed fund to support a first-year seminar in physical sciences. The first seminar will be taught by professors Connors, Harbor and Rahl next winter in the geology dept.

W&L Students Present at Major Geology Conference
Four Washington and Lee University geology majors presented their research at the world's largest geoscience meeting to be held in San Francisco this week (Dec. 5-9).

Congratulations to Geology's Scholar-Athletes for Fall 2011!
Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 166 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed fall term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.50

NSF Grant Funds Replacement Electron Microscope at W&L
An award of $355,319 from the National Science Foundation will allow Washington and Lee University to replace its much-used but outdated scanning electron microscope with a state-of-the art version. "The existing machine works well for teaching purposes," said Jeffrey Rahl, assistant professor of geology at W&L and principal investigator for the grant application, "but in terms of producing publishable cutting edge research, it's too old. The new equipment will have capabilities that are much more powerful than our current microscope."

David Harbor, professor of geology, and Jeffrey Rahl, assistant professor of geology, both of Washington and Lee, presented the results of their summer research to approximately 6,000 geoscientists at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America in October.
