
Here are some important milestones in your internship year. Use this calendar to plan your strategy and organize your efforts.
First week:
- Call for applicants for Reynolds scholarships for Business Journalism candidates.
- Call for applicants for Alex Jones and Todd Smith scholarship candidates.
Second week:
- Schedule a fall appointment with the Intern Coordinator. At the meeting, you'll discuss the intern process and get started on looking for a summer placement.
- Opportunity to apply for American Society of Magazine Editors internship. This is a competitive opportunity; the Journalism faculty may choose just one candidate to support.
- Some of the bigger news outlets are already asking for resumes. Start applying now.
Third week:
- Dow Jones editing internship tests.
First week:
- Sometime this month, meet with the Intern Coordinator.
Second and third weeks:
- Deadline for Alex Jones and Reynolds candidates.
- Thanksgiving break is a good time to organize your resume, craft cover letters and get started on identifying prospective employers.
First week:
- Deadline for Todd Smith scholarship applications.
Christmas break:
- Good time to interview or set up interviews with prospective employers.
Second week:
- Deadline for submitting proposals for the Allen Roberts, Ed Jackson and Ed Korry scholarships, to help fund foreign internships.
Second week:
- Students with internships complete their paperwork.
- Online filing with Registrar to ensure that your internship credits appear as a fall-term overload.
- Apply for Rouse-Bottom internship scholarship, if they are available. These are competitive and awarded by the department
First week:
- Mandatory internship prep meetings.
Summer internships.
First week:
- Make sure you are registered for your summer internship as an overload.
- If you were a scholarship recipient, send a thank-you note to the benefactor.
Second week:
- From an emailed list, pick a date for your presentations.
Third and fourth week:
- Present an oral report about your summer internship.
First week:

- Grades turned in for previous summer. Reports, journals, etc., returned.
