He was legendary. A true teacher-scholar. A brilliant lawyer. A watchful, caring colleague. A down-to-earth person in the best sense of the term. These are among the reasons that, when Roger Groot died suddenly in the fall of 2005, law alumni, admirers and friends immediately flooded Lewis Hall with phone calls and have committed more than $1.5 million to create the Roger D. Groot Professorship. It will be awarded to a faculty member who is not just an excellent teacher, but also a gifted and compassionate person who, like Groot, thrives on interaction with students.
