Recent University Grants

The Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations collaborates with virtually every office on campus to bridge the institutional needs and priorities of W&L with the strategic initiatives of philanthropic foundations and corporate giving programs across the country.  In addition to the new awards below, we currently have multiple projects underway thanks to recent support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Hearst Foundations, the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation, and the Jessie Ball duPont Fund, among many others.  

U.S. Internal Revenue Service: Three-year grant for continuation of services for low-income taxpayers provided by the W&L School of Law's Tax Clinic, directed by Michelle Drumbl, associate clinical professor of law (amount to be determined depending on Congressional budget decisions)

Rouse-Bottom Foundation: Support for journalism internships

Charles Koch Foundation: Support for a student project, overseen by John K. Boardman Professor of Politics William Connelly, to explore the legacy of James Madison

Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life: Support for Yom Hashoah activities.

The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation: Funds to support women scholars. 

The Telford Foundation: Support for Telford Professorship, Telford Science Library and science-related library materials

Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges/Verizon: funding for technology and training for the Teacher Education program

Delaplaine Foundation: Support for the restoration and preservation of Robinson Hall

The Thomas F. and Kate Miller Jeffress Memorial Science Trust: Renewal of grant to support Associate Professor of Biology Robert Humston's work on river ecology and fish populations

Jewish Community Federation of Richmond: Support for Washington and Lee Hillel

Sodexo Foundation: Funding for Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee's Weekend Backpack Snack Program for hungry children

Marietta McNeill Morgan and Samuel Tate Morgan Jr. Foundation: Support for the preservation and restoration of Robinson Hall

J. Edwin Treakle Foundation: Funding for science equipment to study microwaves

Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges: Furnishings for new dance studio

Associated Colleges of the South:  Support for the Shepherd Consortium's Symposium on Teaching Poverty.

The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation: Funding for Shepherd Consortium internships in Washington D.C.

MGN Family Foundation:  Funding for the Washington and Lee Campus Kitchen's Weekend Backpack Snack Program.

Annie E. Casey Foundation:  Funding to support the development of the Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty

Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life: Funding to support and foster student leadership at W&L Hillel. 

The Sam and Marion Golden Helping Hand Foundation: Support for Washington and Lee Hillel's Shabbat Shalom Dinners.

Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges: Funds to purchase a solar-powered pump for the campus vegetable garden. 

The Thomas F. and Kate Miller Jeffress Memorial Science Trust: Research funding for Dr. Robert Humston, Assistant Professor of Biology, to study fish migration in the James River.

nTelos Foundation: Funds to assist the Washington and Lee Campus Kitchens Project in providing meals to the needy.

The Campbell Soup Foundation:  Funding for Shepherd Consortium internships in Camden, N.J.

The Virginia Department of Education: Contracted to hold the Governor's Foreign Language Academies in French, Spanish, and German for exemplary high school students.  

Walmart Foundation State Giving Program: Support for the Washington and Lee Campus Kitchens Project.

Charles A. Frueauff Foundation: Internship funding for Shepherd Consortium internships in Arkansas. 

The Ohrstrom Foundation:  Support for the Shepherd Consortium. 

The Thomas F. and Kate Miller Jeffress Memorial Science Trust: Research funding for Dr. Fiona Watson, Assistant Professor of Biology, for the study of optic nerves in frogs.

Avon Foundation:  Peer education funding to assist the Green Dot program in promoting healthy relationships on campus.

International Flavors and Fragrances Corporation: Funding for Dr. Tyler Lorig, Ruth Parmly Professor of Psychology and Chair, Neuroscience Program, for olfactory research.
