Will Richardson '11 and Chen Zhong '12 joined Professor Joshua Stough this summer to work on automatic object recognition in natural images, an active area of research in computer vision. Object recognition is the task of determining the presence of a specific object or object class in an image. This task is accomplished through machine learning techniques applied to thousands of training images. The group worked to improve upon state of the art results by using more principled metrics of comparison between images and by using better sampling strategies in training . They submitted their results to the PASCAL Visual Object Classes Challenge, a competition held each year in conjunction with an international computer vision conference.
