Applying for Aid

Applying for Merit Scholarships:

The Johnson Scholarship application deadline is December 1, 2012 for prospective undergraduates.  All Washington and Lee University merit scholarships are awarded through the Johnson Scholarship program.  Selection for these awards is based on achievement in the classroom, leadership potential, and accomplishments in extracurricular endeavors.

Families with financial need are encouraged to apply for need-based aid as well.  Merit awards for students with need can range from tuition, room, and board to the full cost of attendance.

Applying for Need Based Aid

Washington and Lee University provides generous need-based grants to students whose families demonstrate financial need.  Eligibility for these grants is based on an assessment of the family's income and assets.

Application deadlines for submitting the CSS Profile and 2011 federal tax returns are:

  • December 1, 2012 for Early Decision I
  • January 15, 2013 for Early Decision II
  • February 15, 2013 for Regular Decision

The FAFSA and 2012 federal tax returns should be submitted after the 2012 tax returns are completed.  If the 2012 tax returns are available by the financial aid deadline, please submit the 2012 returns along with your 2011 tax returns.

Please note we do not accept application materials via fax or email.  You must mail your documents to our office at W&L Financial Aid Office, 204 West Washington Street, Lexington, VA 24450.

Early Decision Applicants:

It is Washington and Lee's objective to provide a preliminary estimated financial aid award prior to the submission of the admission deposit fee.  However, applications completed after the above deadlines risk receiving no grant assistance from the university.

International Students:

Washington and Lee University provides both need-based and merit-based assistance to between 15 and 20 international students in each entering class.  Awards range from several thousand dollars to the full annual cost of attendance.  It should be understood, however, that admission to Washington and Lee does not guarantee financial assistance.
