- Teaching
The department offers a wide variety of courses in physics and engineering, preparing students for work as practicing scientists or engineers, and for graduate studies in a wide range of disciplines in research science, applied science, and interdisciplinary fields. We also serve non-major students with foundation courses allowing them to understand and appreciate the utility, rationality and beauty of the physical sciences.
Program Highlights
- Our faculty consists of excellent teachers and researchers, products of the finest graduate programs in the country, representing a wide range of research specialties in experimental and theoretical physics and engineering.
- The department offers separate degrees in Physics, Physics-Engineering, and Chemistry-Engineering.
- Teaching and research space for the Department includes: general laboratories for introductory courses,; teaching laboratories dedicated to electronics, digital data acquisition, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, and optics; and laboratories dedicated to faculty and student research in areas such as materials science, fluid mechanics, bioengineering, laser optics and surface physics.
- Office space is provided for senior majors and students participating in department research.
- Computing resources include: specialized software and wireless network access in teaching spaces, dedicated workstations specifically for teaching and research in computational physics, digital data acquisition, and computer-aided design.
- For observational astronomy, the department utilizes two Celestron eight-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes, a 3.5-inch Questar telescope, a CCD camera and Johnson filters for photometric data acquisition and advanced image processing software.
- The department makes available and encourages research opportunities for its majors during the academic year as well as during the summers.
- Many majors graduate with collaborative research published in the peer-reviewed literature, and often continue study at major research universities.
