Parents play a very important role in the college admissions process. They act as counselors, travel agents and drivers during the college search. But more importantly, parents are helpers and supporters during the application process. We encourage parents and students to think and speak seriously with one another about the college choice.
While our admission staff takes great pleasure in interacting with parents, we also feel that the college search process should be student-oriented and student-driven. Personal contact with applicants is valuable in our application review and is an excellent means for students to help us get to know them better while signaling their genuine interest in W&L.
One of the most frequently asked questions from parents is about financial aid at W&L. While the process itself can seem daunting, the members of our Financial Aid Office are always willing to answer questions and help families navigate the application process.
As students begin to apply for admission, parents should begin preparing their financial aid application materials. Washington and Lee requires the FAFSA and CSS/Profile forms to be submitted by all families wishing to apply for need-based financial aid. These forms should be filed as soon as possible, but certainly no later than March 2nd. Admitted students applying for need-based aid by this date will have their institutionally determined need met with grants, not loans. Many students enroll each year who would be unable to attend without W&L’s assistance.
Also, don’t forget merit-based sources of funding through W&L’s prestigious, new Johnson Scholarship Program. Its application process is separate from the need-based financial aid application process. To be considered for merit-based scholarships at W&L, students must file their completed admission application, along with the additional Johnson Scholarship application, by December 1, 2011.
