International Applicant FAQs

  • Does Washington and Lee offer ESL or Intensive English Programs?
    No.  It is expected that international students will have a high level of English proficiency.  The Writing Center and department tutors are valuable resources and provide wonderful help when in need. Filed under: International

More than 120 students at W&L hold foreign citizenship, representing more than 45 nationalities in our student body. To encourage first-year international applicants, we automatically waive the $50 application fee for all international students who apply online using the Common Application or the Washington and Lee application.
To apply for admission, international students living outside the U.S. are required to submit an application that includes:

  • Completed application -- The Common Application with W&L's Supplement or the W&L Online Application
    • The $50 application fee is automatically waived for international students.
  • 2 Teacher Recommendations 
  • School Counselor Recommendation 
  • Official High School Transcript with English translation 
  • Official score reports from the SAT (W&L's code is: 5887), the ACT (4430), TOEFL, or the IELTS. 
  • SAT Subject Tests are NOT required for international students living outside the U.S. 

Interviews are not available for international students living abroad, except in the UK.

If you are an international student living in the U.S., please follow the same application instructions as first-year applicants.

Transfer International Students

If you have enrolled full-time at another university, then you must apply as a transfer student. Please visit our page regarding transfer admissions. The testing requirements listed above are required for international transfer students.  Please note, there is no significant source of financial aid available to transfer students.

International students are eligible to apply for both need-based and merit-based financial assistance. Detailed application instructions can be found on the Financial Aid Web site.
