The Lenfest Challenge

For Faculty Compensation

"A Ringing Endorsement of Washington and Lee Faculty"

Washington and Lee’s benefactor and alumnus Gerry Lenfest ’53, ’55L has committed $33 million to an endowment in support of faculty compensation. It is a challenge gift requiring a 1:1 match. He will match what others, many his fellow alumni, contribute over the next few years to help Washington and Lee raise faculty compensation to the mean of salary packages offered by its peer schools.

This gift is a ringing endorsement of the tremendous impact that Washington and Lee faculty have on the students they teach, not just during their time at the University, but for their entire lives.

As our community celebrates this gift and responds to it, we want to provide information that will help our alumni and friends make plans for their charitable giving. We hope you will join Gerry Lenfest in this significant affirmation of Washington and Lee’s educational values.

Washington and Lee has until December 31st, 2010 to raise the required $33 million in matching funds. To learn more about the Lenfest Challenge and how you can respond with a gift, please contact the Office of University Development at 540-458-8410.
