Poverty and Human Capability 103 "An Interdisciplinary Introduction"

(4 credits) Spring annually. Professor Beckley

This course examines poverty as a problem for individuals, families and societies. It focuses on the United States, arguably the most impoverished of any developed nation. Unlike its fall and winter term versions, this version of the course combines the introduction to poverty and human capability with fieldwork and discussions that integrate fieldwork with readings and writing assignments. Since every student will combine the fieldwork with the readings and essays, we will have the advantage of including observations from fieldwork as we discuss the readings in addition to four evening sessions (with meals) that focus explicit on the fieldwork in relation to the readings. Students will receive four credits for 103 and will complete the requirements for both 101 and 102.
