JUST ANNOUNCED: Adjusted Washington Break Schedule Below

Class Descriptions: Winter 2012

  • Body Sculpt: A grab bag of group fitness elements, including cardio and strength intervals, circuit/station work, step drills, stretching, free weights, and Swiss balls. The goal is to get the most calorie burn with cardiovascular conditioning while also toning the body with weight training without adding bulk. Any fitness level can enroll. (Instructor: Holly Snyder)
  • Sport Circuit: A high-intensity total body workout. This choreographed program will get your heart rate up with cardio intervals while taking you through a full-body strength-conditioning workout. Classes vary by instructor. (Instructor: Shana Levine, Katie Gahan, Rob Benevento)
  • Cardio Interval *(NEW)*: Runners have known for years that the best way to improve performance is through interval work. With the use of ladders, gliders, weights, and other toys we will get our heart rates up for short intense periods. Interval training improves our cardiovascular system and it helps improve exercisers' aerobic capacity. This method of training may be more effective at inducing fat loss. Supercharge your fitness, boost your metabolism, burn off that extra fat and start reaching those goals that you have set for yourself in 2012. (Instructor: Wendy Orrison)
  • ZUMBA: Zumba® - When participants see a Zumba class in action, they can't wait to give it a try. Zumba classes feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats. Before participants know it, they're getting fit and their energy levels are soaring! There's no other fitness class like a Zumba Fitness-Party. It's easy to do, effective and totally exhilarating, often building a deep-rooted community among returning students. (Instructor: Ashlea Fowler, Emmy DiGiovanni, Anne Lemon)
  • Zumba® Toning - When it comes to body sculpting, Zumba Toning raises the bar (or rather, the toning stick). It combines targeted body-sculpting exercises and high-energy cardio work with Latin-infused Zumba moves to create a calorie-torching, strength-training dance fitness-party. Students learn how to use lightweight, maraca-like Toning Sticks to enhance rhythm and tone all their target zones, including arms, abs, glutes and thighs. Zumba Toning is the perfect way for enthusiasts to sculpt their bodies naturally while having a total blast. (Instructors: Ashlea Fowler)
  • Employee Fitness: A long running employee class featuring a variety of programs- free weights, cardio, step, etc. (Instructor: Patti Colliton) Winter 2012 selections are:
    • Strength & Toning (Monday)
    • Butts & Gutts (Wednesday)
    • Beginning Boot Camp (low/moderate intensity, functional exercises) (Friday)
  • Cardio Kickboxing: Cardio Kickbox a combination of athletic drills, boxing and martial arts. This intense, total-body workout can improve strength, aerobic fitness, flexibility, coordination and balance. With a concentration on form and repetition, this class will give you an awesome workout without compromising technique. Proper cueing and instruction allow beginners as well as more advanced exercisers to follow the challenging combinations, burn fat, release stress, & have fun! (Instructor: Ray Cohen)
  • Pilates: Consists of a series of mat exercises that strengthen the core, with an emphasis on intense abdominal work. Pilates also increases flexibility and body awareness while improving posture. (Instructors: Anne Lemon, Jessie Knadler, Julie Tisone, Kristen McCabe)
  • Pilates Fusion: Rooted in classic Pilates, Pilates Fusion blends core and spinal work, yoga, strength training, and repetitive dance-based moves designed to pull muscle groups into a tight, sleek and toned whole. Challenging but doable. (Instructor: Jessie Knadler)
  • Group Cycling: Popular indoor cycling class. Classes vary by instructor. (Instuctors: Jeff Shay, Katie Gahan, Eric Ishida, Robert Koch, Ray Cohen, and Rob Benevento)
  • Cycling/Core Combo *(NEW)*: Whether you only have 30 minutes to spare or you want to combine these two into a full body workout, this class will enable you to get in and get it done! If you are short on time, you can choose 30 minutes of cycling or 30 minutes for a quick core workout. If you have more time, you can attend both classes back to back. Both classes will be held in the cycling area about the basketball gym. (Instructors: Eric Ishida, Ray Cohen)
  • Yoga Flow: A rigorous, "come-as-you-are" yoga class ... a fun, free form, flowing, "hot" yoga. Plan on getting sweaty and sore, as well as stronger and more flexible. If you are an athlete or dancer, this c lass will provide the tools to help you work with and prevent injuries. (Instructor: Don Burks)
  • Beginner Yoga and Strength: Strength and flexibility are the keys to a healthy, active life. If you are lacking in either category, this is a great place to start. If you are looking to improve you level of fitness, or just want to know some more about yoga, this is the class for you! (Instructor: Don Burks)
  • Ashtanga Yoga: This is a physically challenging, but "do-able" class. A flowing, "hot" yoga, that will challenge both your strength and flexibility, while giving you an aerobic workout. The primary series of Ashtanga yoga. (Instructor: Don Burks)
  • Morning Yoga *(NEW)*: A low intensity class that gets your mind and body warmed up and ready for the day. This class will emphasize vinyasa yoga, commonly referred to as flow yoga. We will move through postures, or asanas, with fluidity and by using our breath. Linking our poses together creates strength, flexibility, endurance and balance creating better overall health, including better mental awareness. Grab your yoga mat and come down to the racquetball court; replace your morning coffee with morning yoga (or not!). (Instructor: Wendy Orrison)
  • Family Fitness Time *(NEW)*: Family Fitness Time is a way to make getting more physical activity and exercise a family project. It is important to introduce healthy habits and routines to children, so they can learn these routines and use them as they grow. This sends a great message to your kids and makes working out more fun for you. The focus of this class will be on teaching families games and activities that they can use to move together on their own time. We will warm-up, stretch, play games, and move in new and creative ways. This class is for kids ages 3-6 and their parent(s)/caretakers. Families must attend together. This class will run for 6 weeks from Saturday 1/14 - Saturday 2/18 and requires a $50 fee to attend (Instructor: Holly Snyder)
