7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.)  | Lecture by Aron Ralston, The Real Life Story Behind the Movie 127 Hours  NEW!
Keller Theatre, Lenfest Hall
An experienced climber and avid outdoorsman, Ralston was descending a remote Utah canyon alone when an 800-pound boulder broke loose, crushing his right hand and pinning him against the canyon wall. After nearly five days - without water and with no hope of escape - Ralston made a life-or-death decision. He chose life by severing his arm below the elbow, rappelling a 65-foot cliff out of the canyon, and trekking seven miles to find his would-be rescuers.  Ralston documented his life-altering experience in the New York Times best-selling memoir, Between a Rock and a Hard Place, which has been adapted for the big screen by Danny Boyle, the Academy Award-winning director of Slumdog Millionaire. The film stars James Franco as Ralston, and his performance, as well as the movie, have been nominated for numerous awards.  As an inspirational speaker, Aron Ralston moves audiences with his unforgettable story. An ordinary man pushed to the limits, Ralston demonstrates the human capacity for the extraordinary. He takes you on a riveting journey in which courage, perseverance, and human will defy the inevitable outcome.  The talk is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by Contact Committee and the Washington and Lee Outing Club.  For more information go to: http://contactcommittee.wordpress.com/2012/10/22/aron-ralston/

LYKES ATRIUM, WILSON HALL
"Then & Now: Photographs after Michael Miley"

In 1866, Rockbridge County native Michael Miley (1841-1918), opened a photographic studio in Lexington. Over the next fifty years he photographed extensively, creating a vast catalogue of images documenting the landscape, development and citizens of Rockbridge County in the late 19th and early 20th century.
Maury Gortemiller's 2012 Spring Term class (Rephotography: Appropriating the Established Image) researched Miley's historical imagery of Rockbridge County and rephotographed the scenes, remaining as faithful as possible to the camera equipment, point of view, time of day and atmospheric conditions. The project portrays a unique community capable of both vast change and steadfast preservation.

MCCARTHY GALLERY, HOLEKAMP HALL
Art Exhibit: Frank Hobbs

The exhibition of landscapes and figures will be on view in the McCarthy Gallery of the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics, in Holekamp Hall. From 1989-2004 Hobbs resided in Staunton, where, in 1992, he and four artist friends began the Beverley Street Studio School. He taught drawing at Washington and Lee from 1997-2004. Hobbs is best known for his landscape paintings of Virginia. Since moving to Ohio in 2007 his focus has shifted to his new environment. The exhibition at the McCarthy Gallery will include the artist's interpretations of the Ohio landscape, work from Virginia and Italy, and a group of figure paintings from a series painted in Italy in 2010. The exhibit will run from October through December.

STANIAR GALLERY, WILSON HALL
Art Exhibit: Brent Green

The work of filmmaker/animator Brent Green always begins with a story that is crafted word by word until it transcends the language to become part of a unique process of art-making. Green's films evolve from detailed, hand-drawn storyboards, which can take the form of paintings on anything from window frames to cardboard. Often morphing into sculpture, or even song, the narratives solidify until they form the basis for his "DIY folk-punk" animated films. This exhibition showcases the development of this young artist's ideas as he uses all forms of media at his disposal to embody the wonder, urgency, political angst and hope that are at the core of his work. Green's critically acclaimed films have been screened at numerous prestigious venues including The Museum of Modern Art (NYC), The Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, MN), The Hammer Museum and J. Paul Getty Museum of Art (Los Angeles, CA).
