Hispanic Heritage Month

Washington and Lee University celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a host of educational and social events that highlight the cultures and achievements of Hispanic peoples across the globe. From movies in the Stackhouse Theater to dance performances and other events, Washington and Lee provides students with the opportunity to celebrate the Hispanic culture.

Florinda Ruiz
A native of Spain, Florinda is Adjunct Associate Professor in the romance languages department. She took degrees in Classics and Linguistics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, followed by M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Classical Languages at the Johns Hopkins University. She taught in the departments of Classics and Hispanic Studies at the Johns Hopkins University. As Associate Professor at Roanoke College, she taught courses on various aspects of Spanish language and classical languages. In 2006 she received the All-College Exemplary Teaching Award. Among other programs, Florinda was founder and coordinator of the International Internship Program with Spain's Ministry of Education and Culture. She is Associate Book Review Editor of The Sixteenth Century Journal. Her scholarly interests deal with the transmission of the classical tradition within Spanish culture and thought, and with the Linguistics of Ideology in Cultural Discourse. She is also a professional interpreter/translator, certified by the Judicial Council of Virginia and the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as an active member of the American Translators Association.
