Decisions, 2009-2010

On February 2, 2010, the Student-Faculty Hearing Board met to hear allegations against an undergraduate student of Sexual Misconduct and Conduct Unbecoming a Washington & Lee University Student. The allegations were brought to the SFHB and the Office of the Dean of Students by an undergraduate student at Washington & Lee and arose out actions that depicted a female student in a degrading manner, followed by the distribution of the image via email. The respondent pled responsible to both charges.

By a unanimous vote, the SFHB determined that the violations committed by the respondent consisted of Sexual Misconduct in the form of Sexual Harassment and Conduct Unbecoming a Washington & Lee University Student.

By a unanimous vote, the SFHB imposed the following sanctions for both charges:

  • Suspension through the end of the academic year 2010-2011
  • Alcohol training through the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program-20 hours
  • Gender Sensitivity Training-minimum 20 hours
  • Counseling
  • Conduct probation until graduation
  • Social probation until graduation
  • 200 total hours of community service

The SFHB's decisions were announced to respondent at approximately 11:35 p.m. on February 2. Immediately following this, the decisions were announced to the complainant, after which the hearing was adjourned.

The members of the SFHB would like to remind the community that University policy strictly forbids disclosure of hearing facts or materials, as well as harassment or retaliation against Washington and Lee students.
