W&L Cross Country Competes at NCAA South/Southeast Regional

SEQUIN, Texas -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's cross country teams were in action on Saturday morning at the NCAA South/Southeast Region Championships hosted by Texas Lutheran University.

The W&L women narrowly missed an automatic bid to the NCAA National Championships as a team when they finished third overall out of 24 teams. The W&L men finished eighth out of 19 teams. The top two teams for both the men and women receive an automatic bid to the NCAA National Meet.

Individually, the women had four all-region runners led by seniors Jessica Shaw (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) and Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield), who both received individual bids to the NCAA Championship meet. Shaw finished 11th overall out of 169 runners with a time of 22:57, while Webb completed the course in 23:14 to finish in 14th place.

Senior Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) and junior Kat Telfeyan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) also garnered all-region accolades due to their individual finishes. Taylor crossed the tape in 16th place (23:26), while Telfeyan placed 27th (23:59). Sophomore Christine Balistreri (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead) and junior Dorothy Todd (Watkinsville, Ga./Athens Academy) rounded out the Generals' top finishers in 38th (24:27) and 54th place (24:56), respectively.

The Washington and Lee men placed three runners on the all-region team highlighted by senior Michael Welsh's (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) 17th-place finish in a time of 26:25. Senior Vance Berry (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Episcopal) and sophomore Jack Ivy (Memphis, Tenn./White Station) joined Welsh on the all-region team. Berry finished 20th out of 151 runners with a time of 26:31 and Ivy placed 35th overall with a time of 27:02.

Senior Alex Jackson (Centreville, Va./Westfield) and first-year Matt Gossett (Atlanta, Ga./Wesleyan School) rounded out the top finishers for the Generals. Jackson placed 48th (27:24), while Gossett finished 80th (28:09).

The Washington and Lee men have now completed their season, while Shaw and Webb will compete as individuals at the NCAA Championships held on Saturday at Hanover College in Hanover, Ind. The W&L women will also wait until Sunday's team selections to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the championship meet.
