
At Washington and Lee University, most students will get to know the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students and staff within the Office of Student Affairs. The office provides leadership to departments within the Division of Student Affairs and works with all aspects of student life, both inside and outside the classroom. Additionally, staff in the office handle general questions regarding University policies and procedures. The deans also serve as entry points and a clearinghouse for student concerns and resources, maintain disciplinary and other non-academic records, and serve as liaisons with the local community.
The Student Affairs Division includes: Public Safety, Student Health and Counseling Services, Auxiliary Services, and the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students which includes the First-Year Program, Diversity and Inclusion, Student Conduct, Religious Life, Residential Life, Elrod Commons and Student Programming and Recreation.
Sidney S. Evans, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
The Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students serves as the senior executive officer for the Division of Student Affairs at Washington and Lee University. Responsibilities include development of the departmental mission, leadership, and supervision of the majority of student life and student services functions at W&L. The Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students collaborates with various constituents in order to meet the developmental needs of W&L students.
David M. Leonard, Dean of Student Life
The Dean of Student Life provides overall management and direction for numerous departments in the Division of Student Affairs, including Residential Life, Greek Life, First-Year Experience, Campus Programming and Recreation. The Dean collaborates with various constituents to support student learning both in and beyond the classroom and also serves as Secretary of the Student Affairs Committee.
Tamara Futrell, Associate Dean of Students
The Associate Dean of Students is responsible for the development of multicultural programs at W&L. Additionally, the Associate Dean advises numerous student organizations, serves as the head C.A.I.R. resource, and oversees black Greek life. Additional responsibilities include assisting the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students with daily operations and faculty/student concerns.
(Vacant) Associate Dean for Residential Life and Conduct
The Associate Dean for Residential Life and Conduct has primary responsibilities for Residential Life, Greek Life, and Student Conduct within the Division of Student Affairs at Washington and Lee University. Responsibilities include the development of residential and Greek life mission, leadership, and development of development of related programs and policies at W&L. The Associate Dean for Residential Life and Conduct collaborates with internal and external constituents to promote community standards for W&L students.
Jason L. Rodocker, Assistant Dean for First-Year Experience
The Assistant Dean for First-Year Experience serves as the primary resource for all first-year students. Responsibilities include coordinating summer communication, Leading Edge pre-orientation trips, orientation week, peer tutoring, administrative support for academic advising, First-Year Leadership Council (FYLC), extended orientation, and other services and support for first-year students in furtherance of the University mission. The Assistant Dean also chairs the Student Faculty Hearing Board (SFHB) which hears cases of discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct, retaliation, and hazing.
Megan Schneider, Associate Director of Leadership and Residential Learning Initiatives
The Associate Director of Leadership and Residential Learning Initiatives is the advisor and liaison for women's Greek organizations at W&L and serves as the primary campus resource for student leadership development programs. While the position is two-fold, much of the Associate Director's work focuses on enhancing student self-governance and cultivating leadership education and best practices at an institutional level.
James Dick, Director Student Programming and Recreation
The Director of Student Programming and Recreation is responsible for organized recreation and on-campus student programming opportunities at the university. The department oversees the Elrod Commons, Outing Club, Group Exercise, Sport Clubs and Intramural program. The Director oversees the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation and the Elrod Commons Coordinator along with all the student programming and activities associated with those positions. The current director manages the Fechnay Challenge Course, instructs Physical Education classes, coordinates the Appalachian Adventure pre-orientation backpacking trip and organizes a variety of special programs and large break trips throughout the year.
Kelsey Goodwin, Coordinator of Elrod Commons
The Coordinator of Elrod Commons is responsible for the daily operations and programming in Elrod Commons, including the Commons Movie schedule. She is in charge of reservations for rooms, banners and tables. The Coordinator of Elrod Commons assigns student organization office space and assists organizations with planning events in and around the building. Students should also contact the Coordinator of Elrod Commons for registration forms for events on campus with alcohol.
Lynn Fitch, Manager of Student Affairs Operations
The Manager of Student Affairs Operations oversees and coordinates a variety of major projects and activities for the Student Affairs Division.

Wendi Rice, Administrative Assistant to the Division of Student Affairs Assists the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, Associate Dean of Students, and Associate Dean for Residential Life and Conduct.
Sarah Walker, Administrative Assistant to the Division of Student Affairs Assists the Dean of Student Life, the Associate Dean of Students, Associate Dean for Residential Life and Conduct, and the Assistant Dean for First-Year Experience.
