Alex Jones on the media

Alex Jones, a member of Washington and Lee University's Class of 1968 and the recipient of an honorary degree in May 2009, discussed the future of newspapers and the news in a conversation moderated by Brian Richardson, chair of W&L's department of journalism and mass communications.

Jones directs the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy, part of Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. As a reporter for The New York Times, Jones won a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Bingham family, owners of the Louisville Courier Journal. Earlier this year he published a book, "Losing the News: the Future of the News That Feed Democracy," in which he argues that the loss of local newspapers and a sharp decline in investigative reporting is dangerous for America.

The program was part of the Five-Star Festival, a reunion for Washington and Lee alumni who graduated from the University more than 50 years ago.
