    Portuguese students celebrate their interest in Brazilian language and culture.
  • 25 Romance Languages majors join in graduation celebration.
    The morning of commencement Romance Languages hosted its annual breakfast for graduating majors. Faculty and staff greeted some two hundred family and friends of graduating majors, and expressed their best wishes for continued success to the graduates as they reminisced about the past four years at Washington and Lee, and shared their plans and hopes for the future.

    The Spanish faculty of Romance Languages honors two rising senior Spanish majors, recognizing in their passion for the Spanish language and Hispanic culture the model of an outstanding Spanish major.

  • Romance Languages Honors Top Majors
    The faculty of the Department of Romance Languages recognized the recipients of the awards for the top majors in Spanish and French on Thursday, May 28.
  • Romance Languages launches French Minor
    Romance Languages has inaugurated a minor in French as a complement to the French major. The minor offers an opportunity to students who wish to continue their studies in French, but may be unable to commit to the French major program of study.
  • Modern Language Association 2009 Presidential Address: English is Not Enough
    In her 2009 Presidential Address to the MLA, Catherine Porter, President of the Modern Language Association of America, visiting professor at the Society for the Humanities, Cornell University, and professor of French emerita at the State University of New York, Cortland, and translator of some three dozen books in the humanities and social sciences, makes a strong case for Americans to embrace bilingualism.
  • Department awards Elizabeth B. Garrett Scholarship to Brooke Sutherland
    The French faculty of Romance Languages honored rising senior French major Brooke Sutherland with the Elizabeth B. Garrett Scholarship. With this award, the French faculty recognizes in her passion for the French language and Francophone culture the model of an outstanding French major.
  • Department awards Amans Artium Bonarum prize to Erika Vaughn
    The Spanish faculty of Romance Languages honored Erika Vaughn with the Amans Artium Bonarum prize, recognizing in her passion for the Spanish language and Hispanic culture the model of an outstanding Spanish major.
  • 23 Romance Languages Majors Join in Graduation Celebration
    Romance Languages hosted its annual breakfast for graduating majors the morning of Commencement. Faculty and staff greeted 23 graduates and their guests and reminisced about the past four years at Washington and Lee. Amid breakfast and good cheer, faculty expressed their best wishes for the continued success of the graduates and shared in their future plans.
  • Christopher Washnock honored with Edward Lee Pinney Prize
    Christopher Washnock, a Spanish major, was the 2012 recipient of The Edward Lee (Mike) Pinney Prize. The Prize is awarded by the Student Affairs Committee to an undergraduate student who demonstrates extraordinary commitment to personal scholarship and to the nurturing of intellectual life at Washington and Lee.
  • Zachary Cylinder receives the 2012 Amans Artium Bonarum Award in Spanish.
    The Spanish faculty of Romance Languages honored Zachary Cylinder with its departmental prize in Spanish, recognizing in his passion for the Spanish language and Hispanic culture the model of an outstanding Spanish major.
  • Joana Traykova is awarded the Elizabeth B. Garrett Scholarship in French
    The French faculty of Romance Languages honored rising senior French major Joana Traykova with the Elizabeth B. Garrett Scholarship. With this award, the French faculty recognizes in her passion for the French language and Francophone culture the model of an outstanding French major.
