Because law schools admit students from any academic background, a student interested in pursuing legal studies may select any major offered in the College or in the Williams School. Washington and Lee views a broad-based foundation in the liberal arts, perhaps supplemented by specific pre-professional training, as the best intellectual preparation for the study of law. The University encourages pre-law students to select courses that will provide them with an understanding of the history and nature of contemporary society, develop their critical abilities to the fullest, and train them to articulate conclusions and reasons clearly, concisely and precisely. The pre-law student's academic advisor will be a faculty member in the department in which the student chooses to major. The pre-law student should also consult with one of the University's pre-law advisors -- Melina Bell, Lucas Morel, and Robert Culpepper.
