William Sullivan Addresses Washington and Lee Teacher-Scholar Symposium

William Sullivan at W&L Symposium

William Sullivan, senior scholar for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, gave the keynote address at the Washington and Lee Teacher-Scholar Symposium on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009.

The title of Sullivan's presentation was "Liberal Education as a Calling: Challenges, Resources and Strategies."

At the Carnegie Foundation, Sullivan works on the Preparation for the Professions Program and directs the Cross Professions Seminar, which compares education across professions. He is the author of Work and Integrity: The Crisis and Promise of Professionalism in America and co-author of Educating Lawyers: Preparation for the Professional of Law and Habits of the Heart: Individualism and Commitment in American Life. Prior to his work at Carnegie, Sullivan was professor of philosophy at La Salle University. He earned a Ph.D. in philosophy at Fordham University.

The symposium was attended by representatives of 29 liberal arts colleges under the sponsorship of the Mellon Foundation.
