Although once considered the least likely to succeed among the Kennedy political dynasty, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who died on Wednesday (Aug. 26) of brain cancer, will be remembered both at home and abroad as the "lawmakers' lawmaker," said Molly Michelmore, assistant professor of history at Washington and Lee University.
Michelmore, who specializes in late 20th-century United States political, cultural and social history, said that Sen. Kennedy had "this way of sticking to his principles but also getting the job done" when it came to passing legislation during his career in the U.S. Senate, where he became the third longest-serving member.
"As we move into this health care debate, which has become increasingly rancorous over the last month or so, his voice and his ability to forge a consensus without sacrificing central principles and central ideals will be missed," Michelmore added.
