Nate Hoey is in his sixth year as the Head Men's and Women's Track & Field Coach and Director of Running Programs at Washington and Lee University.
During his first five seasons, Hoey has seen the Generals programs flourish. In 2008, the women earned runner-up honors indoors and outdoors as the men tallied up two third-place finishes at the ODAC championship meets. He was named 2008 ODAC Women's Track & Field Coach-of-the-Year. Also in 2008, the Generals produced numerous awards including: Two All-Americans, 6 NCAA National Qualifiers, 10 Individual Conference Champions, 22 All-Conference Performances, 39 School Records, 3 All-Time Conference Records, 8 Conference Championship Meet Records, One ODAC Athlete-of-the-Year recipient, Two Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year awardees, One Rookie-of-the-Year and junior Stacy Doornbos was named NCAA South/Southeast Regional Field Athlete of the Year. Additionally, four team members earned USTFCCCA Academic All-American honors and both men's and women's teams earned USTFCCCA "National All Academic Team" accolades for the fifth-straight year. Coach Nate Hoey was selected in the summer of 08 by USA Track & Field and the US Olympic Committee as an Emerging Elite Coach and was invited to attend a training seminar and coach symposium at the Olypmpic Training Center in San Diego, CA to further study the jumping and combined events with some of the world's best coaches.
In all, during the five seasons, Hoey has guided the Generals program, both men's and women's teams have tallied: 50 Indivdual Conference Champions, 92 All-Conference Performances, 129 School Records, 18 NCAA National Qualifiers, 12 All-Time Conference Records, five Conference Athlete-of-the-Year honorees, three Conference Rookie-of-the-Year awards, 115 Scholar-Athletes and 10 National All-Academic Teams.
Prior to his appointment at W&L, Hoey served as the assistant cross country and track and field coach at West Chester University in Pennsylvania. Hoey was responsible for the development of the men's and women's sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers. In two seasons at the NCAA division II school, he guided athletes to one All-America and 18 All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Awards. His commitment to academic excellence was demonstrated when the WCU Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams earned National All-Academic Team recognition in 2001.
Hoey is a 2000 graduate of Slippery Rock University with a degree in exercise and sport science. While at SRU he was a 13-time All-Conference track and field athlete, three-time conference champion, was twice named athlete-of-the-year, and a PSAC record holder.
Hoey is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, holds the Club Coach Certification from USA Weightlifting, is a USA Track & Field Level II Certified coach in the jumps, sprints, hurdles, relays and combined events. He is working towards his USATF Level III certification in the combined events and is also certified through the Pole Vault Safety Certification Board.
Hoey holds the rank of associate professor of physical education at the University.
Hoey is married to Assistant Track Coach and Head Women's Cross Country Coach Kris Hoey. The couple recently welcomed their first child -- a daughter, Chase Maya, in April of 2007.
