2009 Johnson Opportunity Grant Winners

  • Hiba Assi
    Class of 2010
    Hiba Assi interned at the American University of Beirut- Lebanon through the Johnson Opportunity Grant. She assisted a graduate student in studying the quasi 2-dimensional flow of liquid gallium resulting from the application of electromagnetic forces.
  • Cristina Bratu
    Class of 2011
    Cristina Bratu enrolled in an internship program in Bonn, Germany, that placed her in the non-profit organization Church Development Service (Evangelischer Entwicklungsdienst), where she interned for six weeks in their Financial Department.
  • James Dick
    Class of 2010
    James Dick worked as a director of field research for a small microfinance bank in an under-developed community in Peru.
  • Felice Herman
    Class of 2011
    Felice Herman was awarded a 2009 Johnson Opportunity Grant to participate in a 5-week archaeological field program called the Gabii Project in Italy.
  • Catherine Kruse
    Class of 2011
    Catherine Kruse used her Johnson Opportunity Grant during her unpaid internship at the National Women's Law Center in Washington, D.C.
  • Kendall Massengill
    Class of 2010
    Kendall Massengill worked for MetLife's nonprofit Mature Market Institute, where she redesigned their website to better help seniors and their families.
  • Holly Ratliff
    Class of 2010
    Holly Ratliff spent the summer in New York City working as the Helping Hands Intern at MADRE, an international women's human rights organization. She designed and ran her own donation campaign to benefit children without dental care in Guatemala, raising thousands of dollars worth of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other supplies.

    Class of 2011
    Lauren Sturdy interned at the Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute, working in textile conservation.
