The Washington and Lee Teacher-Scholar Symposium

September 20 and 21, 2009

The Washington and Lee University Teacher-Scholar Symposium will explore the role of the faculty member at liberal arts colleges. Funded with the support of the Mellon Foundation, the symposium will bring together teams of 3 - 5 faculty and senior administrators from 25 liberal arts colleges who will be joined by ational experts on the academic profession.

Topics to be discussed will include:
Do liberal arts colleges offer a professional environment that leads to a distinctive form of scholarship?

How does faculty scholarship complement or conflict with the teaching mission of the University?

Do liberal arts colleges provide an advantageous or challenging setting for exploring interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship?

What policies and administrative programs support the kind of professional faculty careers conducive to the mission of liberal arts colleges?

How does the liberal arts ideal of educating students for lives of responsibility and commitment shape our understanding of the academic profession in liberal arts colleges?
