The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program, established by Congress in 1986 , provides the U.S. with a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields. The Goldwater-Scholarship Foundation names roughly 300 winners annually to receive either a one- or two-year award of up to $7,500 per year. Over the past three years, four W&L students have won Goldwater Scholarships, three of the four being mathematics majors Jameson Graber '08, Joey McDonald '10, and Bena Tshishiku '10. Graber is currently a Jefferson Fellow at the University of Virginia, pursuing a Ph.D. in mathematics. McDonald and Tshishiku also intend to pursue Ph.D.'s in mathematics after graduating from W&L.
